Xiamen,
in context.

An island city shaped by sea routes.

Planning a visit to Xiamen

Planning notes checked 16 October 2026. Day plans are suggestions; check current entry and transport arrangements for your dates.

Allow three full days for a first Xiamen stay, with one of them set aside for Gulangyu. Fix the ferry booking before arranging that day’s island visits; keep a mainland plan available if sailings change.

Three days, including a separate Gulangyu day

  1. Day 1: Settle into Xiamen Island and choose a short walk around Zhongshan Road or the seafront. Leave the evening free for dinner.
  2. Day 2: Take the booked ferry to Gulangyu and choose a walking route with a few interior visits. Allow for the return crossing and the walk back to the pier.
  3. Day 3: Choose the southern coast or one museum visit, keeping the plan short if you leave that afternoon.

Book the correct ferry, then plan the island walk

UNESCO’s Kulangsu listing describes the island also known as Gulangyu and its ferry-only access. The Xiamen Ferry operator’s ticket guidance includes instructions for foreign visitors using passports. Check the current document and payment options before choosing a departure.

Confirm the departure terminal, island arrival pier and sailing date on the actual booking. Outbound and return arrangements can differ. Keep the original booked document with you and leave time for checks. An island ferry ticket does not automatically include every museum or attraction you want to enter.

Choose a hotel for the city, not just the ferry

For a first stay, compare a base around Zhongshan Road with one near your preferred coastal walks. Map the transfer to the booked ferry terminal: the nearest waterfront is not necessarily where your boat departs. Ask about luggage storage if you visit the island between hotel stays.

Gulangyu involves walking on lanes, slopes and steps. Choose a shorter circuit if needed, and check access with each venue. If wind or other conditions disrupt sailings, keep a mainland museum or neighbourhood day available and follow the operator’s notices.

Add Quanzhou with a separate travel block

Quanzhou’s maritime heritage sites offer a different focus for another two days. Check whether your train uses Xiamen or Xiamen North before arranging the hotel transfer. Use the travel preparation guides, or ask us to plan the Fujian stays around your ferry date and onward train.

01 / History

The long view.

Xiamen’s port history connects Minnan culture with Southeast Asia and a long tradition of migration. The waterfront is both a view and an archive.

02 / Culture

How a city lives.

Gulangyu’s music, arcaded streets and southern-Fujian temples offer a distinct cultural texture that becomes clearer when explored at walking pace.

03 / Landscape

A geography that sets the pace.

Ferries, island roads, banyan trees and the strait make water part of everyday movement, not just a backdrop.

04 / Food

At the table.

Shacha noodles, oyster omelettes and seafood markets are the essential local tastes, best tried in small, busy neighbourhood places.

05 / Now

More than its past.

Technology, design and a highly walkable waterfront give Xiamen a relaxed modern confidence.

06 / Local notes

Choose a way in.

Plan the Gulangyu day first

Confirm the ferry date, departure terminal and arrival pier before planning Gulangyu visits. Allow time to walk back to the pier for your return crossing.

Leave time for the mainland

Keep a separate mainland day for Zhongshan Road or the coast. Shacha noodles and oyster omelettes are options for a meal between walks.

Match the hotel to the route

Compare your hotel with both the booked ferry terminal and your railway station. Xiamen and Xiamen North are different stations; a waterfront address does not identify the correct ferry terminal.

07 / Watch

See Xiamen in motion.

A visual companion for streets, weather and everyday pace.
